SPECIAL MEETING

May 17, 2010

Mayor Jim Doyle called a workshop meeting of the Ely City Council to order at 7:15 p.m. on Monday May 17, 2010 in the Council Chambers at Ely City Hall.   Council Members present:  Bob Ballantyne, Kay Hale, and Dale Stanek; Stephanie Mai absent – excused. Bill Grove arrived during the meeting.  Also present Aaron Anderson, City Administrator/Clerk.

 

The City Council met in special session, pursuant to notice as required by State Code, to conduct a workshop session regarding a Dows Street Improvements project as set out in the posted agenda.

 

Stanek moved to approve the agenda as presented, second by Hale; motion carried – 3 to 0.

 

Workshop Session re: Downtown Dows Street Improvements Project.  Bill Grove joined the meeting during this discussion.  Mayor Doyle and the City Council discussed the types of improvements to consider for a project to improve aesthetics and infrastructure in the downtown Dows Street area between State and Main Streets. Following discussion it was the general consensus of the City Council to request the City Engineer to update cost estimates for the following work in the two block section of Dows Street from State Street to Main Street:

 

It was the general consensus of the City Council for the City Engineer to update cost estimates for the following work for Dows Street from Main Street roughly 225 feet east:

·        Remove existing BCS road

·        Seeding and restoration

·        Install new PCC street with curb and gutter

·        Install new PCC sidewalk

·        Install new curb ramp with truncated dome

·        Traffic control.

 

Mayor Doyle and the City Council also discussed options to finance this work and directed the City Administrator to research finance options including possibility including funds for Dows Street improvements project with funding for a much larger bond issue for a future State Street improvements project.

 

It was the general consensus of the Mayor and City Council that the preferred timeframe to perform this work would be to bid the work for construction to begin as soon as possible in spring 2011.

 

Hale moved to adjourn, second by Grove; motion carried – 4 to 0.  Mayor Doyle declared the meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
