The Ely Community History Society, Inc.

The Ely Community History Society, Inc. was incorporated in July of 2003.  Its mission is to preserve all aspects of the history of Ely and the surrounding rural community, including Western & Shueyville, in cooperation with the Ely Historic Preservation Commission, and to help in the creation and ongoing maintenance of a history center and archives through planning, fundraising, volunteer coordination and public education programs.

The Society will periodically conduct direct mail fund raising campaigns for the history center and will continue to apply  for grants from private foundations and from the State of Iowa, as needed to fund its projects.

The Society has been granted tax-exempt status from the IRS as of February 2, 2004. and is exempt from federal income tax under Foundation Status Classification 509 (a) (1) of the Internal Revenue Code as an organization described in section 501 (c) (3).  Donations to the Society are tax-deductible.  Related documents are available for public inspection upon request.

An archives has been developed to preserve the history of this unique ethnic background in a centralized place.

One of the goals of the history society is to educate the public about local history.  To the left, children look at a wall display focusing on Ely school history in the stairwell of the Community Building during a "history walk".
