The City of Ely has a friendly and familiar small town feel that is conveniently located between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. As a result, Ely has grown from a city of 500 residents in 1990 to over 2300 residents in 2020. The City invested in new infrastructure to serve over 600 acres for new development, so we know we will continue to grow. In fact, within the past year, construction began on two new developments that will add over 500 housing units to the community over the next 5 years.

The City is also investing in economic development with the recently adopted Downtown Master Plan and the annual Capital Improvement Plan. These plans support growth and opportunities for commercial and light industrial development as well as recreation and tourism.

The City is updating its Comprehensive Plan (Comp Plan). The Comp Plan will guide growth, land use decisions, and future investments. The new Comp Plan will:

  • Analyze existing conditions and project future conditions
  • Determine visionary goals based upon public input
  • Identify and prioritize areas for growth for range of land uses
  • Develop practical short, medium, and long-term implementable strategies
