Ely American Legion Auxiliary

Legion Auxiliary
Ely American Legion Auxiliary, Unit #555

2023-2024 Year has been very busy and rewarding this past year.

We’ve been baking and selling cookies, participating in Legion and City’s festivals and events, and handling bartending and concessions for events held at the Legion. The red poppy is a symbol of support for the Veterans. The members make and distribute these in our area to show our support as well.

Additionally, our involvement doesn’t stop:

Jr. Members: organized time is spent with the Junior members of the auxiliary.
Girl State: We sent two local girls to Girl’s State in Des Moines.
Scholarships: In conjunction with the Legion and the Sons of the Legion (SALs), 3 scholarships were awarded to students in the surrounding area.
Veteran Day: Evening Dinner was prepared and shared with all Veterans.
Veteran Memorial Monument: Assisted with activities to help purchase the new monument.
Memorial Day: Flags were place on auxiliary members graves at the surrounding cemeteries. Members attended and participated in the Memorial Day Services.
Linn County Auxiliary: We have three members that have been on the county board and continue so for another year, as well one member just recently being appointed the new Iowa Second District President.

The auxiliary members participate in a Government Impact Program. Every hour and dollar ALA members individually invest in our mission of helping Veterans add up. These numbers are reported to the American Legion, which includes them in its annual report to Congress. These numbers are then calculated and then Congress determines the amount and will allot those funds to the benefits of our Veterans. I’m happy to report that the Ely Auxiliary Unit #555 submitted 1,097 Hours and $2,376 Dollars.

If you are a veteran or family member of a veteran, and would like information on this organization, please contact Marlene Mertens, Membership Chair 319-329-7356 or myself at 515-577-3167 and we would be happy to visit with you.
